Term 1

Ronald MacDonald visit
Today we had Ronald MacDonald visit us. When he got to our school he was trying to hang his washing out on the line but one of his red and white sock got blown away. He went to look for it, while he was looking for his sock, he taught us how to be safe on the road and he also showed us what to do when crossing the road. We must "Stop-Look and Listen" before we cross.

At the end we've found his sock for him, silly Ronald the sock didn't blew away it got stuck to his back. Ronald was very funny. We all enjoyed listening to him.

Our Inquiry model  "Plan-Do-Share"
This week we worked with Mrs Northover to follow the model of Plan-Do-Share to create a shoe.
The guidelines were...

  • Title.
  • Think of the purpose for the shoe.
  • How does is reflect New Zealand?
  • What resources do we need to make it?
PLAN:
We looked at you-tube clips and pictures of lots of different shoes going back to the 1800 centuries.

We worked with a buddy in this project. We continued the skills from our EOTC in this learning. Skills such as; team work, sharing, supporting, cooperation etc... With our buddy we draft out our design.

When we have finished our draft design, we shared it with the class. After sharing we went back to modify our design by making changes.

DO:
We used a range resources to make our design. It was fun working with lots of different materials. We found that as we were making the shoe we need to make some changed because some of the materials were too hard to stick.

SHARE:
We shared our learning with all the Year 2 children. It was fun explaining what we have done and how we made the shoe model.

The amazing sleepover
WOW!! what an amazing event. It was compacted with many fun activities, yummy food and a night sleep. We started the sleepover with Kelly sports, we enjoyed all of the activities.

After Kelly sports we had hamburgers and chips for dinner. It was big and delicious. Some of us couldn't eat the whole burger. We like the way we could choose our own salad. After dinner we had yummy fruit kebabs.

After dinner we got into our PJ and watched a movie until 9pm. We all went to bed but took us a while to sleep because the light was so bright and people were snoring.

In the morning we all did jump jam in the hall and after that we had cereal and fruit for breakfast. Then it was time to pack everything to go home. We all enjoyed the sleepover.

The egg challenge

On Wednesday afternoon the Year 3 students from Rooms 19, 20 and 21 got together for another science and technology challenge.

Once again the students were put into groups and told their task.  They had to design and make a way of protecting an egg from cracking when being dropped from just over a meter height.  Each group was given 4 paper napkins, 4 straws, some string and some sellotape.  They had to decide upon and draw their design first, then they were given their materials to begin building, before finally being given the egg to finish off their "protection".

Some groups decide they would wrap the napkins around the eggs and put lots of sellotape on to help keep it safe.  Other groups attempted to make frames/holders for egg using the straws before wrapping those in the napkins.  Some groups even attempted parachutes to slow the egg down when falling as well as wrapping the egg up.

Soon it was time to test out each groups designs.  One at a time each group climbed the steps outside Room 19 and dropped their eggs on the ground.  Mrs Buchanan was in charge of checking whether the eggs had survived or cracked/smashed.  Two groups managed to drop their eggs without them breaking.

The students had a lot of fun making and testing their designs.  The task involved some critical thinking, fine motor and team work skills and the students did a great job.

Week 8and 9
Education Outside The Classroom (EOTC)
It has been a busy week compacted with EOTC activities. We did lots of team building activities such as: making a tent with newspaper, maths challenge, science experiment, posters, cross the bridge and mat without falling off. We had fun getting to know other children from other classes and we learnt how to work collaboratively to complete set tasks.

Week 7
Picasso Art
We had finished our self-portraits and they are looking super colourful on our wall. We really enjoyed working with the hot and cold colours. It was fun doing it.

Torbay School Flag poll

All the children at school have voted, these are the final results.

  • current flag    221
  • new flag     259
  • difference 38

Week 6
It has been a very busy week with our learning. Some of the things we did were...

  • Shared our learning goals with our parents and caregivers.
  • Finished colouring our Picasso self-portraits and now just need to finish the background.
  • Voted for current flag or new flag.
  • plus all our other curriculum areas
We also did a fun challenge using a cup, balloon, and a fluffy ball. The aim was to see who sling their fluffy ball the furthest. Cooper's ball went the furthest, it was about 4 meters.

For Plan-Do-Share, we worked with Room 20. We did a range of activities, such as using boxes, Lego and play-dough to create a range of different objects. Some of us unplugged the type writer machine bit by bit. It was so much fun.

Harry shared a you-tube with us for news this week, it was so amazing to watch. We all thought the artist was so clever and talented. You could watch it at home and see if you could draw like the Stefan Pabst. Here is the link to watch the short clip.

Week 5
This week for art we have started doing our self-portraits. We practiced drawing ourselves using a pencil, then we created some lines crossed our faces just like the artist Picasso. Next we used hot and cold colours to create an effect for our portrait.

Week 4
This year our buddy class is Room 12, on Thursday we had our first session together. We got to know our buddy's name, we read stories and we also drew a picture of our buddy. It was so cool to work with the Year 1 children. We look forward to our next session together.

This week for maths we all worked collaboratively to play some games. We learnt to follow instructions and took turns to solve the problems. We were learning to solve basic facts and adding doubles.

We were learning to order numbers from the smallest to the biggest quickly.

Max and Shaun were ordering and reading the numbers

Neve and Olivia were learning to say before and after numbers up to 100.

Jarred was learning to order numbers from the smallest to the biggest.

Week 3
Our Fabulous Kawau team item
What an amazing turned out for our performance. We were really nervous at the beginning but as soon as we started singing we really enjoyed it.

Week 2
Wow!!! What a hot hot hot day today. Our classrooms (Room 20 and 21) were so hot that we went outside under the trees to cool off. We listened to a story while we drank heaps of water. We felt much better after that.

This week in maths we learnt to collect data using tally marks. We did a survey on our favourite holiday things to do. It was fun because we got to ask all the children in the class and we found out that the most favourite things were camping and fishing.

Week 1
First day photo
Our first day back at school. It was great to see our friends again after the long holidays. We all felt a bit nervous at the beginning of the day,but as the day went we all settled into our new classroom and made new friends.

Class Treaty
We did a picture of ourselves to go with our class treaty. We talked about the rules for in and out of the class. We also talked about how to use the C.A.R.E values at school.
Some of the rules we came up were...
  • No running inside the class
  • respect self/others and the environment
  • Use good manners
  • Be nice and kind to each other
  • Help others
  • Listen to each other

Swimming was cool
The water was so cool for such a hot day. We all enjoyed the time in the pool.
